Loma Alta Park out to Mt Hillyer and back. One hundred miles through the San Gabriels. Thirty-three hours. The 2026 line is a new one.
The mountain
For 2026 this is not Wrightwood to Altadena. Eaton Fire and Highway 2 closures killed the point-to-point. Out and back from Loma Alta Park in Altadena to Mt Hillyer. Gabrielino, Clear Creek, Josephine, Red Box, Newcomb, Shortcut, Chilao. Back via Chantry, Mt Wilson, Mueller Tunnel at Eaton Saddle, Sam Merrill, Millard. One hundred point eight miles. Vert for this line is not published as a final number, so it is not listed here.
The work
San Gabriel heat, night, and a lot of fire-year trail. Thirty-three hours. You train climbing in chaparral and a second trip over the same ridge. Lottery. Trail work is part of the culture.
Race morning
Five a.m. Saturday at Loma Alta. Check-in and drop bags Friday at the park. Cutoffs on the checkpoint chart. Crew and pacers only where the chart says yes. Finish Sunday at two p.m.
Watch outs
The new line. Heat on the front side. Night on Hillyer. Mueller Tunnel and the fire closure. Do not run a Wrightwood start in your head. That race is not this year.
