The cruxMt. Baden-Powell and the hot drop into Chantry Flats

Course DNA

The Course

Sandy exposed singletrack. Steep granite chutes. Mt. Baden-Powell climbs to 9,300 feet on sandy trail. Then the hot drop into Chantry Flats on the second day. Dry. Dusty. Full Southern California sun. Chilao. Low 1,100 feet. High 9,300. Trail 80 percent, jeep 15, paved 5.

The Work

Dry heat at altitude. Heart rate climbs. Fluid leaves fast. Quads take the long descents. Train heat. Vertical descent blocks. Salt and water have to be precise.

Kit

Breathable shoes with a wide toe box. Feet swell in the heat. Gaiters for fine granite sand. Dust bandana or buff to filter the dry mountain trails.

Race Day

Calm breathing on the long climbs. Dry dusty air will tear a throat if you gasp. Hike the steep grades. Hydrate. Salt. Baden-Powell, then Chantry Flats in the heat. Chantry Flats and Chilao are the crew points. Cold sponges. Ice. Fresh bottles. Dry socks and shoes. Liquid fuel when food dies. Keep the stop on cooling.
