The cruxThe Bighorn mud and the climb out of Dry Fork
Course DNA
The Course
Thick red clay mud. Mountain canyons. Singletrack. Dry Fork is the long climb. If it rains, the clay sticks and adds 5 pounds to each foot. Jaws sits high. Low 4,600 feet. High 9,400. Trail 76 percent, jeep 16, paved 8.
The Work
Lifting mud-caked shoes loads the hip flexors and hamstrings. Lower back joins in. Core has to hold. Cold and wet on the high ground, heat in the canyons. Train mud running. Weighted hikes. Cold-weather work.
Kit
Deep, widely spaced lugs. Salomon Speedcross or Saucony Peregrine. They shed clay. Durable poles for the slick slopes. Extra dry socks. Anti-chafing cream for wet feet.
Race Day
If the mud hits, forget pace. Poles. Forward. Keep calories high. Save the running for drier valley singletrack. Jaws at mile 48 is cold, wet, and muddy. Rough mountain roads for crew. Sub-freezing is normal. Hot food. Dry shoes. Fresh socks. Then leave.
