Course DNA

The Course

Westling Ranch to Berg. Off-trail scree. Cairns. Mountain passes. No trail on the high line. You hunt cairns across sliding alpine scree. Conical Pass sits at 10,200 feet. Low 5,800. Porcupine to Ibex is 13.3 miles with no aid. Trail 70 percent, jeep 20, paved 10.

The Work

Ankles take the tax. Off-trail traversing on angled scree loads calves and hips all day. The climbs are hypoxic. You need vertical power in thin air, not road fitness. Single-leg balance. Loaded step-ups. Long hikes on ungroomed rock.

Kit

Technical shoes with a rock guard. Carbide-tip poles that bite scree. A squeeze filter (Katadyn BeFree) for alpine streams. Porcupine to Ibex will empty you if you skip the creeks.

Race Day

Conserve out of Westling Ranch. Do not run dry between Porcupine and Ibex. Power-hike the steep lines. Place your feet. Conical Pass is where the cutoff bites. No cell. Crew drives rough ranch roads to Westling and Berg. Pacers at Halfmoon and Sunlight need mountain legs. Keep the handoff under 15 minutes. Warm. Then leave.
