Course DNA

The Course

Eastern Sierra loop around the Long Valley Caldera. Volcanic pumice. Sand flats. Sierra ridges. Sagebrush in the valley. The course is bookended with Mammoth Mountain, 11,053 feet. Sliding pumice underfoot. Low 6,424 feet. High 11,053. Trail 65 percent, jeep 28, paved 7.

The Work

Climbing at altitude on loose sand. Calves, Achilles, and hip flexors take the slip. Hypoxic vertical power. Train altitude volume. Sand running. Long pole-climbing blocks.

Kit

Volcanic-dust gaiters (Dirty Girl or equal). Fine pumice will fill a shoe and blister you. Cushioned trail shoes with a robust outsole. Windproof layers for the summit wind.

Race Day

Take the Long Valley Caldera flats easy. Pumice dirt drains the legs if you run it like road. Steady climbing on the Sierra slopes. The last summit is after 210 miles. Sliding pumice. Thin cold air. Crew around the Eastern Sierra. Cell is spotty. Hot food. Dry socks. Sleep on a clock.
