The cruxThe Highline Trail

Course DNA

The Course

The Highline Trail sits under the Mogollon Rim. Off-camber singletrack. Loose limestone boulders. Downed pines. Deep canyons. Myrtle and Donahue climb at 30 to 45 percent on loose rock. You claw. The Rim wall traps the heat. Shade is rare. Low 5,000 feet. High 8,000. Trail 75 percent, jeep 20, paved 5.

The Work

Ankles take the Highline sideways for hours. Stabilizers fatigue first. Quads take the descents. Eccentric, constant. Single-leg stability. Ankle mobility. Long vertical hikes on technical rock.

Kit

Sticky rubber on the limestone. Vibram Megagrip or La Sportiva FriXion. Lightweight carbon poles for the off-camber tread. A bright waist lamp for the rock fields after dark.

Race Day

The Highline is slow. Power-hike Myrtle and Donahue. Pinchot Cabin will try to keep you in the cold pines. Ten minutes. Then leave. Washington Park and Geronimo sit on rough gravel. Crew waits with dry layers and hot calories. Broth. Quesadillas. The night climbs are cold.
