The Course
Out-and-backs from Ouray into San Juan couloirs and mine roads. Camp Bird. Bridge of Heaven. Fort Peabody hangs in the high country. Shale. Screeing jeep track. Steep walls that do not care about your training log. Low near 7,689 feet. High near 12,763. About 28,900 feet of gain and the same in loss across 102.1 miles. Trail 50 percent, jeep 45, paved 5. Lightning finds the ridges in the afternoon.
The Work
This is a climbing race dressed as a hundred. Repeated 4,000 to 5,000-foot out-and-backs. Train power-hiking on steep dirt and scree. Eccentric quads for the plunges back to town. Altitude overnight. If you only run flats, Bridge of Heaven ends you.
Kit
Poles with carbide tips for shale. Fully taped shell. Warm layer for the high out-and-backs after dark. Sticky shoes that still brake on loose rock. Headlamp and spare: 52 hours means night work.
Race Day
Treat each out-and-back as its own race. Do not empty the tank on Fort Peabody early. Bridge of Heaven is the last big climb: 5,000 feet of shale above treeline when the legs are already loud. Crew in town. Short transitions. Hot food. Then climb again. Cutoffs are real on 52 hours of mountain math.
