Course DNA
The Course
Jerome dumps you on gravel and pavement into Clarkdale. Then red sandstone. Casner is a powerline corridor. Loose sandstone and shattered volcanic rock. No water. Full sun. Mingus sits in the same mountain block. Red Rock Crossing is the river. Pine loam takes over on the Coconino Plateau. Mount Elden trails close it. Low 3,258 feet. High 7,458. Trail 62 percent, jeep 29, paved 9.
The Work
Canyons run near 90°F. Plateau nights can hit 30°F. Heart rate works the climbs. Quads brake on off-camber sandstone steps all day. Train the heat-to-cold swing. Load the quads on technical downhills. The plateau climb will not wait for a shut stomach.
Kit
Sticky rubber. Vibram Megagrip or La Sportiva FriXion on slick red sandstone. Cushion under it. Wide-brim hat with a neck cape and ice pockets. Ice the hat and the arm sleeves at Clarkdale and Verde Valley. Core temp is the race.
Race Day
Bank nothing on the Jerome to Clarkdale drop. Gravel and pavement will shred the quads before singletrack. Nose-breathe Casner and Mingus. Casner is waterless and fully exposed. Sedona crew access is congested. Park early at designated trailheads. Red Rock Crossing can rise. Towels and a full shoe change ready. Mount Elden trails confuse at night. Call the handoff.
