The cruxSound of Music hill and the mucky horse trails after mile 70

Course DNA

The Course

Classic New England hundred from Silver Hill Meadow. Sixty-eight miles rolling dirt roads. Thirty miles horse trails that turn mucky after rain. Two miles pavement. Seventeen thousand feet of unrelenting ups and downs with no summit payoff. Sound of Music hill is the high point near 1,600 feet. Pretty House, Camp Ten Bear, Margaritaville, Spirit of 76, Bill's, Polly's. Twenty-five aid stations. Cupless event.

The Work

Death by a thousand rollers. Train power-hiking on steep dirt roads and runnable descents on tired quads. July humidity matters as much as vert. Night miles on horse trails require focus when sleep debt hits.

Kit

Cupless. Carry a soft flask or cup for every aid station. Trail shoes with grip for mucky horse trails. Bug dope for evening sections. Light rain shell. Headlamp with fresh batteries for two nights if slow.

Race Day

4:00 am Saturday start. Finish by 10:00 am Sunday. Handler stations with horses share the trail. Aid cutoffs are non-negotiable. Crew at Pretty House, Stage Road, Camp Ten Bear, Margaritaville, Spirit of 76, Bill's, Polly's. Vermont humidity at mile 80 is the silent killer.
