Course DNA
The Course
Crans-Montana start in the Swiss Valais. Varneralp and Leukerbad lead to Gemmipass at 2,268 meters, a steep sustained section through the Leukerbad wildlife reserve. Kandersteg and Adelboden cross into the canton of Bern. Ueschine and Lenk roll through Oberland villages. Cabane Wildstrubel at 2,789 meters is the high point above the Plaine Morte glacier. Col du Rawil and Barrage de Tseuzier return to Valais along the Ro bisse. Six thousand six hundred meters of vert in a 113 km loop. Western States lottery qualifying for finishers.
The Work
Alpine loop racing with two cantons and two languages. Train steep Gemmipass-style grades near 27 percent. Long runnable descents after Rawil. Heat in lower Valais valleys and cold on the hut section the same day. Back-to-back vert days with pole hiking.

UTMB World Series mandatory kit. Wind layer for Cabane Wildstrubel. Poles for Gemmipass and the Rawil descent. Sun protection for open pasture. Reserve capacity for the long Leukerbad to Kandersteg section.
Race Day
Gemmipass is early and steep. Do not blow the account on Crans flats. Adelboden at km 60 is the drop-bag hub. Crew at Leukerbad, Kandersteg, Adelboden, Lenk, and Tseuzier. The Wildstrubel hut section hits tired. Tseuzier lake is the emotional finish line even though Crans still waits.
