Course DNA
The Course
Black Canyon Trail first. Net downhill. Runnable. Basalt dust and fine granite sand. Jeep and singletrack toward Prescott Valley. The drop into Jerome is boulder-strewn. Mingus opens the mountain phase. Coconino Plateau sits above 7,000 feet. Mount Elden is volcanic switchbacks and dry pine-needle loam that slips. Low 1,500 feet. High 9,300. Trail 45 percent, jeep 46, paved 9.
The Work
Jerome loads the patella on a technical boulder drop. Quads take the eccentric hit. Then the Coconino Plateau asks for aerobic work above 7,000 feet with less air. Train heavy eccentric quad blocks. Sit in a heat chamber. Both systems have to work on the same body.
Kit
Dual-vent gaiters on the Black Canyon Trail. Basalt dust and granite sand will fill a shoe. Injinji liners under merino outers. Shear dies on the hot descents. Two high-lumen lamps with modular packs. Lithium drains 50 percent faster in the night wind on the Flagstaff ridges. Carry the spare.
Race Day
Do not race the first 30 miles of the Black Canyon Trail. Power-walk the rollers. Dry heat takes the skin if you push. Prescott Valley to Jerome is recovery before the mountains. Mingus at mile 110 is a 4,000-foot grind. Elden at mile 230 is the wall. Sleep-deprived. Volcanic. Cold enough to drop 40 degrees in an hour. Crew needs high clearance and 4WD for Bumble Bee and Fort Tuthill. No cell in the canyons. Offline maps. Sleep at Jerome and Fort Tuthill. Transitions under 20 minutes or the muscles freeze.
