The mountain

A closed course on trails, four-wheel roads, and cross country in the San Juans. Four legs linking Silverton, Telluride, Ouray, and Lake City. Thirteen passes in the twelve-to-thirteen thousand range. Handies Peak is the high point at fourteen thousand forty-eight. Average elevation about eleven thousand. Low point Ouray at seven thousand six hundred eighty. Wet feet most of the day. Direction flips each year. Clockwise one summer. Counterclockwise the next.

The work

This is altitude as a lifestyle. You live above ten thousand in training or you pay for it on the first pass. Thirty-three thousand four hundred forty-one feet of climb, same of descent. Scree, snowfields, and a monsoon window the race tries to hit. The forty-eight hour cutoff is there so you can sit out lightning.

Race morning

Silverton. Lottery in December after a qualifier and trail work. Fourteen aid stations. Towns are the real support. Between them you carry what the weather asks. You kiss the rock at the finish. 2027 runs counterclockwise.

Watch outs

Afternoon thunderstorms above treeline. Snow that is ice at night and postholes at noon. Elk. Hypothermia in a valley that felt warm at the start. If your hair stands up, you are already late getting off the ridge.
