The cruxThe Continental Divide Trail (miles 30 to 50)

Course DNA

The Course

Continental Divide singletrack. Mining roads. Miles 30 to 50 sit on the CDT, above 11,500 feet, topping 13,100. Rocky. Exposed. Alpine passes. Afternoon lightning on the ridges. Pine-loam descents if you saved the legs. Hancock. Alpine. Saint Elmo. Low 8,150 feet. High 13,100. Trail 66 percent, jeep 27, paved 7.

The Work

Climbing above 11,000 feet. Oxygen is the limiter. Quads take the eccentric load on steep mining-road descents. Train altitude. Sustained climbing blocks on dirt. Leg strength for the drops.

Kit

Windproof jacket for the Divide. Emergency bivvy and a loud whistle on the CDT. Offline maps and GPS on the watch. Fog on the alpine will erase the trail.

Race Day

Power-hike the high climbs. Save the running for the pine-loam descents. The CDT is twenty exposed miles. Move. Crew needs high-clearance 4WD for Hancock and Alpine. If the truck sticks, drop bags vanish. Saint Elmo is cold. Warm food. Dry socks. Then leave.
