Course DNA

The Course

Rim Nordic start above Big Bear. Crab Flats and Camp Whittle open Holcomb Valley. Doble Camp appears twice on the loop. Burns Canyon and Cactus Flats bridge the desert-side transition. Sugarloaf Mountain at 3,047 meters is the high point, crossed on the outbound at km 105 and again near km 128. Bear Mountain and Snow Summit drop toward the lake. Pacific Crest Trail connectors and forest road transitions break up the singletrack. Altitude starts high and stays high.

The Work

Hypoxia at moderate elevation. Big Bear sits above 6,000 feet. Train at altitude or arrive early. Double Sugarloaf means climbing the same mountain on tired legs. Heat in Holcomb Valley and cold on Sugarloaf the same day. Long runnable sections reward efficient flat running between climbs.

Kit

UTMB World Series mandatory kit. Warm layer for Sugarloaf at night. Headlamp for two crossings of remote sections. Dust mask or buff for Holcomb Valley dry sections. Poles optional but useful on Sugarloaf grades.

Race Day

Camp Whittle and Doble Camp 1 set early pace. Cactus Flats is the first major crew hub. The first Sugarloaf climb separates contenders. Balky Horse to Sugarloaf 2 is the back-half crux. Snow Summit feels like the finish. Big Bear village still waits.
