Course DNA
The Course
Rim Nordic start above Big Bear. Crab Flats and Camp Whittle open Holcomb Valley. Sugarloaf Mountain at 3,047 meters crossed twice. Bear Mountain and Snow Summit drop toward the lake. Pace the early miles. The split often shows at mile 50. 36 hours spans 100 mi on 75% trail. +18,651 ft shapes the middle miles.
The Work
Hypoxia at moderate elevation. Double Sugarloaf means climbing the same mountain on tired legs. Heat in Holcomb Valley and cold on Sugarloaf the same day. Stack altitude weeks before you load the second Sugarloaf crossing. Long October back-to-backs with night miles.
Kit
UTMB World Series mandatory kit. Warm layer for Sugarloaf at night. Dust mask for Holcomb Valley. October in Big Bear Lake, California: 35°F to 85°F. Pack for 14 stations and night if 36 hours runs long. Spare headlamp for the second Sugarloaf push.
Race Day
First Sugarloaf climb separates contenders. Balky Horse to Sugarloaf 2 is the back-half crux. Double Sugarloaf Mountain (10,000 ft) crossing decides the back half. Hold calories and keep aid stops under control with 36 hours on the clock.
