The Course
Extended figure-eight from Western Nevada College at 4,888 feet. One hundred two miles on Tahoe Rim Trail and Spooner backcountry. High point 9,214 feet below Snow Valley Peak. Eighteen thousand one hundred forty feet gain. Tunnel Creek visited four times. Diamond Peak twice with hot meals after dark. Dry Sierra air and sustained climbing above 7,000 feet on the back half.
The Work
High-altitude average elevation near 8,000 feet. Train sustained climbing at altitude. Diamond Peak cutoff at 17 hours. Final 17 miles demand two liters minimum fluid. Heat in Carson City finish contrast with cold night on the rim.
Kit
Layers for cold night and 90-degree Carson City finish. Poles for long climbs. Bear-aware food storage at crew stops. Sun kit for exposed rim sections. Filter or treat water if planning between-aid stretches.
Race Day
36-hour cutoff, 5:00 pm Sunday. Western States qualifier. Dry air under 10 percent humidity. Drink to thirst and then drink more. Do not expect a PR on this course. Crew access at key trailheads only.
