Course DNA

The Course

Start at Steamboat ski base, 6,886 feet. Climb Mount Werner to 10,372 on Storm Peak Challenge Trail. Buffalo Pass and Rabbit Ears turnaround near 10,534 feet. Emerald Mountain loops through town. Fish Creek Falls descent. Summit Lake and Dry Lake high country on the Wyoming Trail near the Continental Divide. Roughly 86 miles trail, 8 miles paved, rest jeep road. One hundred one point five miles. Twenty thousand three hundred ninety-one feet up and down.

The Work

Repeated 3,500-foot climbs to Mount Werner. Train uphill repeats at altitude. Hares start Friday afternoon. Tortoises start Friday morning with more night miles. Emerald Mountain at night is cold and technical. Quads take the Fish Creek descents.

Kit

Layers for 40-degree swings between night and afternoon. Two lamps with lithium backup. Poles for long climbs. Crew bike or foot access only at Fish Creek Falls. Drop bags at Summit Lake and Olympian Hall.

Race Day

Do not race the first Mount Werner climb. Strict aid cutoffs. Hares and Tortoises share the course with different start times. Olympian Hall crew access has a hard window. Thirty-hour cutoff. Prize money brings depth up front. Pace for cutoffs, not headlines.
